[2004-10-07] Released slrn 0.9.8.1
I decided to make one more release before the upcoming transition to slang-2, so here it is. Compared to 0.9.8.0, it mainly offers a bunch of bug fixes, but also gives a (minor, but convenient) bit of new functionality (see list of changes). Please use our download page to get the tarball.
[2003-08-25] Released slrn 0.9.8.0
Yes, it took quite some time, but the new version of slrn finally has been released. It has an impressive list of changes, including the long-awaited true offline reading functionality. I also integrated a lot of patches and want to thank everyone who made a contribution.
As always, you can get the source tarball from our project's download page.
[2003-08-19] New slrn FAQ available
A new, updated and more comprehensive FAQ for slrn is now available, written by Matthias Friedrich and Thomas Schultz. It will replace the files FAQ, SCORE_FAQ and slrnpull/FAQ in the next release of slrn and is based on those files, which were originally written by John E. Davis.
You can read and / or download the new FAQ on our manual page. Feedback on it (to the slrn-user mailing list or to us personally) would be welcome.
[2003-07-31] slrn 0.9.7.4pl3 offers true offline reading
The long-awaited true offline reading functionality is now implemented in the developer snapshot 0.9.7.4pl3, which also offers a lot of other fixes and enhancements over the last stable release. A full list of them can be found on the changes page.
I have to admit that I did not yet test the new code very thoroughly; if you are willing to help testing it nonetheless, please get the tarball from our patches page. If you are a translator and can find some time, please update your translation, as slrn 0.9.8.0 will now (hopefully) be out soon.
[2002-03-13] slrn 0.9.7.4 is out
Finally, a new release of slrn is out. It has lots of minor bugfixes (including some rare segfaults) and improvements, a new sorting implementation (allowing powerful custom sorting), new translations (es, fr, ko) and a few new intrinsic functions.
As always, there's a full list of changes and you can get the source tarball from our project's download page.
[2002-02-03] Screenshot page online / "Port" to Mac OS X
As we got requests for a collection of screenshots on slrn.org, we now put together what we could find on the web and created a new page for them. It contains thumbnails of the screenshots, as well as links to the original pages with the full-sized versions. Felix Schüller volunteered to maintain it, so please contact him if you want your own screenshot to be added to our collection.
Felix also resolved the problem people frequently ran into when they tried to build slrn on Mac OS X. Please see his comment and patch for details.
[2001-11-05] slrn 0.9.7.3 is out
The new release of slrn is available. This time, the changes are full gettext and automake support on Unix, a function to display which scorefile entries matched an article, autosaving of the newsrc file, some minor new features and new intrinsic functions as well as the usual bugfixes and even one security fix.
You can get the source tarball from our project's download page or just look at the full list of changes.
[2001-09-20] slrn is going international
The probably most important new feature of the next release will be gettext support (Unix only), which will make it possible to translate slrn's user interface into different languages.
The first preview of this new version is now available from our patches page. If you want to translate slrn into your language, you can already fetch the snapshot and start working. For those who never did such a translation, I put down some brief notes.
[2001-08-20] slrn 0.9.7.2 released
A new stable version of slrn is now online. Besides a number of bugfixes, better support for non-Unix systems and a bit of new documentation, it starts up faster on some systems and has minor new features, like tab completion or detection of ``news:'' URLs. It is also more RFC compliant than ever.
At your option, you can download the tarball directly or look at the full list of changes first.
[2001-08-11] slrn-announce mailing list created / wishlist reviewed
I created slrn-announce - a new mailing list which will only be used for announcements, e.g. when a new version of slrn is released. If you are subscribed to slrn-user, there is no need to read slrn-announce as well - all postings to it will get cross-posted.
Sven and I also spent some time reviewing the wishlist; it now includes some suggestions I forgot to copy from his page when writing it in the first place. We also compiled a list of wishes that should go into 1.0, so each feature now has a status field, telling you for which version it is planned.
[2001-06-06] slrn 0.9.7.1 released
The new stable version of slrn is finally there. It has a fully customizable group mode and status bars, highlights URLs, makes use of some common NNTP extensions, offers better documentation and has lots of minor improvements and bugfixes over the previous version.
As always, you can look at the full list of changes or download the thing directly.
[2001-04-19] Full documentation online
All the documentation that comes with slrn's source distribution can now be found on our new documentation page. You will find both plain text and (where available) HTML versions there and you can download tarballs for offline reading.
[2001-03-28] slrn 0.9.7.0 released
I finally released the new, long awaited stable version of the slrn newsreader, 0.9.7.0. Besides adding exciting new features, it also fixes a lot of annoying and some (potentially) security relevant bugs, so I recommend the upgrade. You might either want to look at the changes or go straight to the download page.
Thanks to everyone who helped by contributing code, writing documentation or reporting bugs.
[2001-03-15] Public preview of slrn 0.9.7.0
I feel that the current development code is now stable enough to be tested by interested end users, so I released it as a new preview, 0.9.6.4pl4. Although it is now distributed as a tarball, it still can be found on our patches page.
This is for people who are willing to spend some time testing unfinished code; others should wait for 0.9.7.0, which should be out Real Soon Now.
[2001-01-28] First steps towards slrn 0.9.7.0
I spent the last few days revising our patches and integrating them into the source tree that will finally become version 0.9.7.0. Now, a first preview is available as a diff against 0.9.6.4. It is still incomplete and not intended for regular users.
[2001-01-19] Thomas Schultz new slrn maintainer
As John E. Davis, the author and long-time maintainer of slrn announced in news.software.readers, he is currently not able to devote enough time to the development of slrn. Thus, he decided to entrust me with this task and I will try to fulfill it to the best of my ability.
This also means that as of version 0.9.7.0, the slrn web resource will become the official website of slrn. You can expect this around mid-February; John sent me a pile of unanswered email that I want to work through. To keep this process as efficient as possible, please do not mail me about bugs or patches before the new release if you already told John about them. Thank you.
[2000-12-21] slrn 0.9.6.3pl3 released
Finally, a new version of our set of patches for slrn 0.9.6.3 is out. It includes a number of bugfixes and a few new features. I recommend an upgrade for users of slrn 0.9.6.3pl2; others might want to have a look at our bugfixes.
[2000-10-22] Matthias Friedrich joins the team
We are glad to announce that Matthias Friedrich, who works on the new reference manual and contributed some patches, is now a regular member of the slrn web resource staff.
From now on, the manual is developed via CVS and you can do an anonymous checkout if you want.
[2000-09-27] Initial release of the slrn reference manual
Matthias Friedrich and Thomas Schultz started to write a new end user manual. You can now browse and download its first release, which already explains all slrnrc commands, configuration and environment variables, as well as the command line switches.
[2000-09-18] slrn 0.9.6.3 is out
John E. Davis released the new slrn 0.9.6.3 yesterday, which mainly fixes a number of bugs. I updated our patches and wishlist page accordingly.
[2000-08-16] Macros page online
I just revised three of my macro sets and put them on our new macros page. More is to come as soon as I find the time to revise the rest of them.
[2000-08-05] www.slrn.org points to our new site
Sven Guckes changed the forwarding on www.slrn.org so that it takes you to the page you are currently reading. If you are looking for information that has not yet been transferred to our new site, please refer to his original pages.
[2000-08-04] Mailing list and ``wishlist'' page online
We created a public mailing list for suggestions, announcements and discussion about the slrn web resource.
We also have a new page - the wishlist, on which known bugs and unimplemented feature requests are collected.
[2000-07-07] The slrn web resource starts off
Last week, Sven Guckes, Felix Schueller and Thomas Schultz met on the LinuxTag in Stuttgart, Germany. They decided to merge their existing slrn projects and registered a SourceForge account to be able to maintain the website together. It already includes the pages from the ``slrn+'' project and some information from www.slrn.org. More is to come, so stay tuned ...
