Manual / FAQ
Last update: Wed Apr 5 09:32:27 CEST 2006
Information

On this page, you can find the current versions of the ``slrn reference manual'' and the new ``slrn FAQ'' written by Matthias Friedrich and Thomas Schultz. The reference manual has been written from scratch; the new FAQ is based on three older ones written by John E. Davis.
Plain text versions of both documents are part of the official slrn distribution. This page allows you to read the files online and to download them in different formats.

Read it online
Browse the reference manual / FAQ as HTML
The above links will take you directly to the table of contents of the manual / FAQ.

Download it
Download the reference manual as .txt.gz / plain text
Download the FAQ as .txt.gz / plain text
This is an ASCII version of the manual. The gzip'ed version uses the common control sequences for bold and underlined text (which are also used by nroff and understood by most terminals). The uncompressed ``plain text'' version does not have them.
Download the reference manual / FAQ as .html.gz
This tar archive contains the HTML version of the manual. It can be used for offline browsing.
Download the reference manual / FAQ as .sgml.gz
These are the SGML sources of the slrn reference manual. You can download them if you want to use the sgmltools to create different output formats (however, please note that we only checked the output of sgml2txt and sgml2html). If you want to make a major contribution, you might consider getting the most recent version of the SGML sources from CVS.

Available translations

So far, there is only an Italian translation [.txt.gz|.html.tgz|.sgml.gz|ps.gz] of slrn's manual, written by Antonio Fragola.
If you speak more than one language, you can really help people who do not understand English well by translating the manual or FAQ into your language. If you made a translation, please notify us so we can link it from this page.

How to contribute

Suggestions for the manual and FAQ are welcome, so if you found an entry difficult to understand, please let us know - especially if you can think of a better way to explain it. If you can think of additional topics that should be covered by slrn's documentation, please report this as well (if you write an FAQ / manual entry for it yourself, this will of course be greatly appreciated). Please also tell us about errors or bad language - neither of us is a native speaker.
Another way to participate is to translate the FAQ or manual into a different language (see previous section).
All questions regarding the FAQ and manual can be discussed on the slrn-user mailing list. Of course, you can still email us privately if you want.

Get it via CVS

If you want to read the latest ``development version'' of the manual, you can check out the current SGML sources from our public CVS repository. To do so, first login anonymously by typing
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/slrn login
The password is empty, so you can simply hit return when you are asked for it. To actually download the file, type
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/slrn co manual
From now on, you can update your copy of the manual via cvs -z3 update.

If you do not want to use the CVS command line client for some reason, you can also get the file via the ViewCVS web interface sourceforge.net offers.
